Welcome

The City of Hobbs Interactive Services (COHIS) allows residents and City staff to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through the internet. COHIS provides local level GIS support and coordination from City of Hobbs Engineering and Mapping departments data. COHIS mapping products are available for end users using an up to date internet browser capable of running the Flash 10 plugin. The latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome have been tested and are fully supported with COHIS internet mapping software.

What is GIS?

GIS is an integrated system of computer hardware, software, and trained personnel linking topographic, demographic, utility, facility, image and other resource data that is geographically referenced... (NASA GIS)

How to use GIS data.

  • Shapefiles are a geospatial vector data format for geographic information systems software. Shapefiles spatially describe points, lines and polygons. A "shapefile" commonly refers to a collection of files with ".shp", ".shx", ".dbf", and other extensions on a common prefix name (i.e., "lakes.shp"). SHP files can be viewed in GIS viewers as well as more sophisticated GIS applications.
  • Keyhole Markup Language (KML) is used by a variety of GIS and mapping applications and the specifications are freely available to the public and available to the user community without charge or restriction. KML is an XML-based language for managing the display of three-dimensional geospatial data in the programs Google Earth, Google Maps, Google Mobile, ArcGIS Explorer, and WorldWind.
  • The Flex Viewer was developed using ESRI ArcGIS API for Flex and Adobe Flex. The Interactive maps need a modern internet browser, and the Flash 10 player to access the Flex mapping software.

The City of Hobbs Interactive Maps run on Flex technology. Flex requires the latest Flash plugin to be installed on your computer. Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome are fully compatible with Flex running on Flash.
